Bookstores across Japan are disappearing as the industry grapples with the impact of both population decline and online shopping. Official figures show as many as a third of the country’s bookstores may have vanished in the past decade. However, there’s one Tokyo neighborhood where bookshops aren’t merely surviving, but thriving. Reporter Chris Gilbert went to have a look at how “Booktown” has bucked the downward trend.
