Datong, in north China’s Shanxi Province, is the site of several awe-inspiring historic sites.
The city has one of China’s most outstanding Buddhist treasures, the Yungang Caves, as well as the world’s oldest wooden pagoda, the Hanging Temple. Some crumbling earthen sections of the Great Wall can be found here, too. The pillars don’t offer any structural stability at all. They could be completely removed, and the temple would stay in place, defying gravity, in Datong, north China’s Shanxi Province.
