China Media Group (CMG) on Sunday launched an online variety show featuring more than 40 anchors displaying their talents in dance and music among others. The live broadcast was watched by more than 60 million people in real time while related short videos have been played 700 million times and the related topics read two billion times.
The performance, which lasted five and a half hours, showed different cultural elements, from hanfu (the traditional clothing of the Han people) to comics.
The participants took viewers and audiences on a journey to appreciate the distinctive Chinese costume art from different periods, including cheongsam and hanfu. Others played ancient musical instruments, such as the shakuhachi, a flute made from bamboo, the guqin, a plucked seven-string instrument, and the Chinese big drum. Pop culture was also on display with a medley of songs from Chinese animated television series “Haier Brothers,” “Black Cat Detective” and more.
Anchors also shone in a talk show segment, which showed their professionalism, eloquence and interviewing skills. Ahead of the big show, participants shared short videos and vlogs of the rehearsals on social media platforms, creating an online buzz before the broadcast.
