Visit the Xujiahui business area in Xuhui District and you’ll be awash in a sea of flowers.

The business circle has been decorated with floral landscapes to celebrate the National Day holiday and Mid-Autumn Festival, Shanghai’s greenery authorities announced on Wednesday. In Xujiahui, garbage bins, fire hydrants, a telephone booth and mailboxes have been turned into floral artworks with more than 10,000 flowers such as roses, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums and tulips from the Netherlands. A team of florists working overnight helped make the display possible. The “flower flash mob” is the first of its kind in China and will last till Thursday. “Such beautiful floral scenery brightens my mood on the way to work before the holiday and I share the beauty in my WeChat,” said Ada Xu, who works in the area.

Some flowers will later be delivered to senior homes, along with cards and wishes collected from the public during the event. “October 1 marks the Mid-Autumn Festival and we want the elderly at senior homes to feel warm and cared for,” said Wang Ying, director of the Xuhui District Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau. Meanwhile, two greenery spaces along the Zhaojiabang Road overpass in the district have been renovated into parks with blooming flowers. One of the parks has camphor trees maintained and decorated as a peacock flower landscape. Another features flower beds shaped into loving hearts and diamond. The landscapes will be adjusted based on the change of seasons, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said.
