On the basis of mutual respect, China and the United States can communicate at all levels and in all fields and communication does exist between the two sides, said Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press conference on Wednesday.

Zhao was commenting on the remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump in an interview. Trump had said that his relations with Chinese leaders have been frayed after the COVID-19 outbreak and they have not spoken for a long time.

COVID-19 is the common enemy of mankind, Zhao said, stressing that China has always advocated that all countries work together to tackle the virus.

“Viruses should not be labeled or politicized, and blaming the virus on China will not help get rid of the virus or save the sick.”
