In response to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce statement, Zhao Lijian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said at a regular press conference on Friday that it’s ‘the right and wise decision’ for the U.S. business community to strengthen economic and trade ties with China.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce underscored the importance of functional China-U.S. ties on Thursday, saying that China’s 1.4 billion consumers represented the fastest growing market for U.S. companies.
The Chamber acknowledged the geopolitical and economic challenges the two countries encounter, while emphasized that a functional relationship was “in the fundamental interests of Americans, and of peace and stability in the world.” Zhao echos with the view that maintaining stable development of Sino-U.S. relations is conducive to world peace and stability.
“The nature of China-U.S. economic and trade relations is mutually beneficial and win-win. The development prospects are very bright since the fundamentals of China’s economy are stable, and the benefits of reform and opening up are constantly shown,” said Zhao.
He added that China and the U.S. benefit from cooperation and suffer from confrontation, while referring to the existing differences as normal, saying the two countries should and are able to properly handle them on the basis of mutual respect. Zhao said that China is committed to working with the U.S. side to develop a relationship featuring non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect, and win-win cooperation.
Trade between the two countries increased to 39.7 billion U.S. dollars in April, up over 40 percent from the prior month, surpassing Mexico and Canada, according to a Wall Street Journal report earlier this month. The paper called China a “bright spot” for the United States in a “gloomy global trade picture.”
