Pei Tangyu has been making lacquered gourd for more than five years in his hometown of Xiaxian County in Yuncheng City, north China’s Shanxi Province. He has combined several traditional techniques to make unique lacquered gourds. The Chinese lacquer that Pei uses is a natural resin from lacquer tree, dating back more than 8,000 years. One relic with a so-called “funny face” recently went viral on social media in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province. It’s among more than 240 cultural relics on display at the “Da Zheng Zhi Yuan” exhibition at the Shanxi Museum. The exhibition aims to showcase Chinese human history spanning millions of years, including 10,000 years of cultural history and 5,000 years of civilization history.
