Makit County in Kashgar Prefecture of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is popularly known as the capital of red dates. Red dates, also known as jujube, is a Chinese specialty consumed both as a food and herb. “A Date With China” media tour 2021 visited Achadun Dates Farm in Makit’s Yantak Village to taste the country’s favorite alcoholic beverage “baijiu” made of locally grown red dates.

The village recorded an output of 500 kilograms of red dates and an income of 4,000 yuan per mu (666 square meters) in 2020. Fondly called “fortune trees” by local residents, the earnings from red dates account for 70 percent of the farmers’ total income.
