Starting from the north of Beijing, the Grand Canal ends in Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province, making it the longest man-made waterway in the world and one of the greatest hydraulic projects in human history, with a length of 1,797 kilometers. Linking China’s northern and eastern plains, it once played an important role in transporting grain to northern China. This year, the country has launched a water replenishment project, bringing water to all of its dried-out sections for a full connection of the waterway for the first time in over a century.
