The court fan, also known as a royal fan or palace fan, is a traditional Chinese handicraft. One of the traditional weaving techniques used in the fan-making process is called kesi, and it was added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009. Li Jing entered the business in 2013 as an apprentice under some of the best craftsmen in Suzhou, a city famous for its traditional fan-making industry. Now, he has a workshop of his own. Li’s fans are popular, not only for their details, but also because they are made using one of the world’s oldest spinning methods – kesi. Li brings this ancient weaving tradition to a new life in Suzhou. Check out the video:
