China already possesses the world’s largest high-speed railway network, and it will only expand more ambitiously, according to the country’s new Five-Year Plan. But it’s not just the railroads that are extending. China may also get a major boost in the speed of its bullet trains. A prototype maglev train unveiled recently at Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu aims to set a new speed record for trains – the current record of 603 kilometers per hour is held by Japan’s SCMaglev. High-speed rail services resume between Chinese mainland, Hong Kong [CGTN]

The high-speed railway linking the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong resumed operation on January 15. Passenger services resumed operation in the section linking Shenzhen’s Futian and West Kowloon in Hong Kong. The resumption of the greater Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed rail services comes a week after the checkpoints between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong reopened on January 8.
