Artisan cafes in the south Chinese city of Guangzhou are infusing Cantonese ingredients in their seasonal brews, and attracting throngs of young customers. Many local connoisseurs are snubbing big western franchises and seeking out unique flavors on their doorsteps. For coffee entrepreneurs, the old corners of the city offers lower rent and an increasingly valued sense of nostalgia. According to the online delivery giant Meituan, Guangdong has consumed the most in-store coffee for three years in a row since 2020. As Huang Fei discovered, business has roared back since the lifting of pandemic restrictions.
